Empadronamiento (Address Registration)

Empadronamiento is your official address registration with the Ajuntament de Barcelona (Barcelona City Hall). You need it for your TIE/NIE, opening a Spanish bank account, the public health system, university paperwork, and any immigration renewal. Do this first — almost everything else depends on it.

Before you start

Make sure you have these ready — missing any one can send you home from the appointment.

What you bring depends on how you live. If your name is on the rental contract, it is straightforward. If you only rent a room or a host is registering you, you also need the main tenant or owner's documents and a signed authorization letter. Bring originals AND photocopies of everything.

If you live in an Airbnb, hostel, hotel, or other short-term stay, you cannot get empadronado at that address. Sort out longer-term housing or an authorized host first.

Do I need a digital certificate to get empadronado?

No, the in-person process does not require one. A digital certificate only helps if you want to download extra padrón certificates online later.

Can I do empadronamiento fully online?

Barcelona has an online padrón process where you upload documents digitally, but first-time international students are very often asked to verify in person anyway. For your first registration, plan on going to the OAC in person — it is the most reliable path.

Use Barcelona's online appointment system. Don't show up at an OAC expecting to be served — they will turn you away. If the website fails, calling 010 from a Spanish phone sometimes works as a backup.

Attend the appointment

Show up 15–20 minutes early with all originals, copies, and the booking confirmation.

The officer will check your documents and register your address in the padrón system. If everything is in order, the appointment itself takes only 5–15 minutes. Organize your papers in the order you'll be asked for them — passport, contract, authorization, copies — so you don't fumble at the counter.

Bring the rental contract OR the owner's authorization letter — not both. If the apartment owner comes to the appointment with you, the rental contract on its own is usually enough. A recent utility bill in the same address isn't always required, but some OACs ask for it — bring one if you have it. You don't need to bring a blank padrón form — the officer fills it out with you at the counter.

Where to go

Print the booking confirmation from your email — it has the exact OAC office, date, and time, and the staff often want to see the printout. Go to the same office you selected when booking, not any other district office. They will only find your appointment in their system.

Receive your padrón certificate

You leave with a printed volante or certificado de empadronamiento.

The volante de empadronament is printed on the spot at the appointment. A certificado (a more formal version) can be requested afterwards online if you need it for a specific procedure. Most uses (TIE, bank, health) require the certificate dated within the last 3 months — keep both digital and printed copies.

What if I move? Do I need to update the empadronamiento?

Yes. You should register your new address through the same OAC process. Your TIE address is expected to match, though you do not need a new TIE card just for an address change.

Can I empadronarme without a rental contract?

Only if the property owner or main tenant signs an authorization letter and attaches a copy of their ID. Without one of these, the OAC will refuse the registration.

What do I do after empadronamiento?

Usually: book your TIE fingerprint appointment, open a Spanish bank account, and register with the public health system. The padrón certificate is required for all of them.
